George Gray
I have studied many times
The marble which was chiseled for me --
A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor.
In truth it pictures not my destination
But my life.
For love was offered me and I shrank from its disillusionment;
Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid;
Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances.
Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life.
And now I know that we must lift the sail
And catch the winds of destiny
Wherever they drive the boat.
To put meaning in one's life may end in madness,
But life without meaning is the torture
Of restlessness and vague desire --
It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.

An Ongoing List of Things I Have Learned While Living in a Zoo
Let me preface this list by explaining my current living situation. I have lived on my own, give or take a few roommates, since the moment I graduated from High school and went off to Utah State. The first 5 years I moved a BUNCH. Have I mentioned I hate moving??? It might be because I moved every year and sometime twice a year. But as I settled into life I found this amazing two bedroom apartment, wonderfully situated in Holladay. It was great; inexpensive, walk in closets, great location. It was so great in fact, that I couldn't stand the thought of moving EVER AGAIN! But six months ago I finally got over my fear. A dear friend of mine, Jason, had a big house with an empty basement apartment. He offered me a deal I couldn't refuse and I have never regretted moving or ever looked back.
The best part of moving into a big house is the big family that I automatically joined as soon as I moved in. There was never a dull moment or a quiet one. But it was awesome. I painted my walls with bright and cheerful colors and when I wanted a little down time I closed the downstairs door and tuned out what sounded like a heard of elephants. We had some great parties. It was the perfect house for our awesome "pre-funks."
But as with most good things, they do eventually come to an end. UDOT decided to build the Mountain West Corridor right where our house stands and subsequently forced the sale of all the houses on our street. They have already started demolition on several of the houses.
I had to move again!!! But as I said earlier, I have no regrets. I loved living with Jason and my little make shift family.
What to do next? I loved not paying an arm and leg on rent. I loved living with my make shift family. I loved that any time I wanted a little company they were just a stairway away.
I went apartment shopping and even put a deposit down on a place, but It just didn't feel right. My fabulous cousin April had offered several times for me to rent her guest room and the more I thought about it, the more peace I felt.
So I cancelled the apartment and moved into my new bedroom. It turned out super fabulous. I love the hardwood floors and the great shower right across from my room. And while I miss having more space and a walk in closet, I truly love the chaos and goings on of a full house of people I love.
It may be because I am really good at tuning out a ton of the noise when I want to and I'm pretty sure I could sleep through the Apocalypse.
So I have decided to start compiling a list of things I have learned while living in a zoo:
1. Everything is washable, even the giant stuffed frog little Thyce threw up on.
2. The more the merrier. I mean it. Peace and quite is highly over rated.
3. April is an incredibly generous, giving, and industrious woman.
4. Always lock my door when I want quiet time ;-)
5. Sister wife jokes are inevitable.
I will continue to compile this list as time goes on.
The most I can say about my life is that I am happy. Happy in all the wonderful people I get to share it with and in the fun that is never far way. I am even happy in all that my life is not....or should I say, not yet.
Its always a great experience to find that some of things that were once so important, i.e. walk in closets and zip codes, don't matter nearly as much as I thought. For once, its nice to be wrong.

Fools Gold
I have been thinking a ton about love lately. Its probably because something has changed for me. Ive met a man that I could actually see loving. Its way too soon to really even be thinking about love. Ive only spent a handful of moments with this person. I dont really even know him. But for the first time in YEARS!! I could see it. Sure Ive dated people in the last two years but I can say with honesty, that I was never tempted to love any of them. I never wanted any of them to stay. And here I am wanting a man to stay. Its frightening and seems an impossible road to take again. And yet the desire is there. I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. I have no idea what he is thinking or feeling. But I love this change.
I keep thinking of two things:
A quote that I have written on a post-it on my computer at work.
"Safety is over-rated and security is fools gold."
And a line from one of my favorite Foo Fighters songs.
"The only thing I'll ever ask of you, you gotta promise not to stop when I say when."
Every "chicken" part of me wants to hide and play it safe. But there is also a deep desire within to be brave. When I look back at the chances Ive taken and the moments when I was brave and just dove in, no matter the outcome, I am proud.
So Im going to ask myself not to stop, especially when I say when. And win or lose, love or alone, Im not going to play it safe.

Carefree Highway
My visit to Cave Creek Arizona was wonderful and came at the perfect time. I hate January in Salt Lake. Its dark and gloomy all the time and freezing cold. I always get a mild case of the blues without the Sun. So off the Arizona we went. Jana, Annette and I were perfect travel companions. We left the Valley at 4am and arrived in Cavecreek at around 3pm. The moment we turned onto the Carefree Highway I felt just a bit more carefree. My step mom Sheri was an incredible hostess. She has set the bar high and I only hope one day that I can come close to making my guests feel so loved, taken care of, and out right SPOILED. Their home is stunningly tidy. Each us got our very own fresh towels every day. She slaved in the kitchen before we got there just to welcome us with homemade cookies and bread.
I opted for a quick shower to wash the travel off me and then headed out to the patio in a tank top and shorts. Wow did the sun feel amazing. We spent a couple hours out there soaking up the rays, having some drinks, and catching up with each other. My dad said I looked like a "Viking Warrior Princess." Up until that moment I had been satisfied with the results of all my exercising. But suddenly my dads intended compliment left me wondering if I looked like China from woman's wrestling. My dad must have read the concern on my face because he quickly changed it to, "you look like a warrior princess?" That wasn't much better. He reassured me that I "look great, fit, strong...a princess" I could live with that.
Sheri treated us to sloppy joes on homemade butter buns. OMG were they good. I had no idea what a difference homemade rolls could make. They were chewy on the out side and soft on the inside. It was such a comforting and relaxing evening.
I helped Sheri make Pineapple/orange rolls. It was fun working together and the results were oh so delicious. The only sad thing about it was that I took my Tiffany and Co. ring off to play with the dough and it went M.I.A. It is upsetting to lose something I treasure, but it also is a good reminder that it is just a thing.
We all had a blast shopping. I love Trader Joes. I picked up some yummy chocolate and organic sparkling wine. The mall we went to was to die for. Tiffany and Co, Crate and Barrel, Macy's, and Lush were just a few of my favorites.
We got back to Casa de Peeples well after the sun went down, but that didn't stop us from a Peeples Putting tournament. There were several pics with little "orbs" floating around us on the putting green so we decided that this was a highly important golf match with past generations in attendance. Dad won of course! He may have had an edge, it being his own personal putting green and all.
We had great drinks, Sheri fed us yet another amazing meal, and I fell asleep, cuddles up on the couch listening to my dad tell stories from the past. I thought it was a dream when he changed subjects to remark on how he may have finally been sold on my dark hair, that it was a stunning combination with my blue eyes, how cute I was while I slept, and what a great person I was. But Annette told me the next morning about the sweet things he had to say about me, so it wasn't a dream after all.
Our final day in AZ was EPIC. We all got up early, had coffee, and took turns getting ready while Sheri made us breakfast. We looked for my ring but it was no where to be found.
And then it was off to the races. Have I mentioned that I love horse racing? Well I do. It is so much fun.
Dad and I, aka the Dynamic Duo, were not doing very well. After 6 races, we hadn't won anything. But all of that changed with a little horse named "Dinner with Dan." Since my dads sisters always call him Dan, Jana insisted that Dad vote on that horse. The horse didn't look like much and his numbers weren't great but at the insistence of Jana, dad went for it. We turned a measly $10 bet into $1600 bucks!!!!!!! Woooohooo! When that number popped up we both started screaming and jumping. It was awesome. We decided that since we bet on a horse named "dinner with Dan" and had a big, expensive dinner planned later that night, we would treat Janabanana and Annette. Winning was a blast.
Later that night we were all treated, courtesy of our new favorite horse, to a the dinner of a lifetime. Never before have I experienced anything like dinner at Binkleys in Cavecreek, AZ. It was so far beyond my expectations because I didn't know a meal and wine could be so perfectly paired, creative, and flavorful.
We each ordered a 5 course meal with wine pairing but it really was more like a 20 course meal.

I also got to try some of Dads Foie Gras and Janas Carrot Cake Custard with real candied carrots and carrot ice cream.
It has been over a week since this meal and I still cant stop thinking about it. Every little thing was perfectly thought out and complimentary. The flavors were so sophisticated and satisfying. It has changed my expectations forever.
From the moment I turned onto the Carefree Highway, just a few miles from my Dad and Sheri's home, my stress level dropped down from an 8 to about a 2. I really needed the laughs, comfort, love, and fun. I cant wait to go visit again, fingers crossed that Binkleys is a part of that visit.
